18/12/2011 - Monster Christmas Special
Leicester Square Theatre, London
Tickets here
Celebrating the move to our new home, the scarily clever comedy programmers behind MONSTER - London's best* and most monthly comedy night - bring you an extra special yuletide show, packed full or mirth, merriment and the cheapest crackers we can find.
Quite simply, don't miss this. The line up is extraordinary. It'll be like that time Ringo and Paul got together and thought that John and George might like to join them for a jam.
*this is completely and utterly subjective
One member of team Monster saw these guys recently, laughed uncontrollably at them and booked them the next day. We're so damn chuffed that they can do it as they are going to be extraordinarily well known very soon indeed. Funny guys.

"Rory and Tim drip talent...taking simple premises and developing them in directions at first hidden, their sketches have legs other comics only dream of."
**** EdFringeReview
"Nimbly structured, well-delivered and punchy."
Winner BBC New Comedy Award 2011
Brighton Comedian and all-round comedy superstar Angela has always been a Monster favourite. We're happy that other people started realising how ace she was - especially those guys at the beeb, as she recently won one of the most prestigious prizes in comedy. We're very, very, lucky to have her with us. don't take our word for it... take Sarah Millican's. She called her "brilliantly funny".
"a beautifully paced performance that was aided by the consistent quality of her jokes, many of which showed a great skill with self-deprecation" Chortle
Do you ever get that thing where everyone, literally everyone, talks about something being awesome? All the time? And you go and you really want it to be rubbish but it blows your mind? Yeah. That.
"One of the most exciting sketch acts to emerge in years" - Time Out
Madcap sketch quartet the Beta Males broke onto the comedy scene with their debut show three years ago. Since then they've gone up and up and now they're so high up the comedy ladder they probably need oxygen and that space food you get at the Science Museum. One major paper described them as "Absolutely first class" the other day. We're inclined to agree.
"Everything comedy should be" - Spoonfed

Winner: Amused Moose Laugh Off Runner-up: So You Think You're Funny
Our regular MC has hit the London comedy circuit running. Already a Fringe veteran with acclaimed, irreverent sketch trio WitTank, he is now diverting his angry Anglo-Turkish energy to stand-up as well as sketch comedy. Someone called him 'the next Rik Mayall' recently. Rubbish. Rik was never that mental.
"His is a name to remember, however difficult that might be. Very confident, very original and tightly performed" Richard Herring
"Spirited, witty and individual; more energy than a dozen Duracell bunnies" Chortle
It's difficult to describe the unique experience which is Dr Brown, so I'll just say that he's racked up the following: Top Ten pick of the Fringe 2010; Malcolm Hardee Award for Most Original Comedy nomination 2010 and 2011; The Times' Best Comedy Newcomer 2010; Total Theatre Award nominee 2011; sell-out run at the Soho Theatre and then in Australia, Canada and America; a feature on BBC2's Review Show; British Comedy Guide Best reviews of 2011 including four 5* reviews.
20/06/2011 - Monster: A colossal new comedy night Wilmington Arms, London

With...
Thom Tuck
The Three Englishmen
Chris Martin
Behemoth
Transformer
The Gentlemen of Leisure
Allnut & Simpson
And regular MC Naz Osmanoglu
Priced at a mere five pounds, hosted at the pleasantly situated Wilmington Arms in Farringdon at the reasonably timed hour of eight o' clock (at night) this new night of superlative sketch and stand up comedy was pretty lolzilla.
Just a cursory glance at the AWESOME LINE UP proves that it was a more portentous beginning than when Keith saw Mick holding a Chuck Berry record at a train station and thought he might be a good front man.

Monster is a not-for-profit comedy and performance arts enterprise. We seek to alleviate suffering and improve well-being by fundraising for deserving causes through comedy and theatre. We make donations and grants to charities and other regulated organisations that exist in England and Wales for the relief of the disadvantaged and deprived.
We put on events (funny). You come along (laugh). Your ticket money goes to charity (good). It's that easy.
With regular nights as well as pop-up gigs in interesting locations, we make sure all the money goes to a host of good causes.
(oh, and if you've got any good ideas for gigs, or any exciting venues, we'd love to hear them)
Monster is a registered Community Interest Company (CIC), a type of not-for-profit, so everything we make in profit we give away. Our board of Trustees identify worthy causes and deserving charities. It's their job to decide who gets what and how much.
If you want to find out more about CICs, have a look here

This will be happening, and that right soon...

We are live, and this website is up and a-functioning. How dreadfully exciting.
Those lovely guys at Laugh Out London did a small feature, in podcast form, on our very first London gig. Great news. Catch it here
Just one of the many, many strong parts of what will be, given the test of time, a very respected show.
This might be my favourite joke from This Is Spinal Tap.
(and that’s Billy Crystal)
I came across an absolute gem the other day. Alec Baldwin, serious-actor-come-comedy-colussus, interviewing Lorne Michaels. A laid back discussion between two people that clearly have lot of respect for one another, the chat focuses on the birth of that bastion of american comedy – Saturday Night Live.
When you think about the careers that SNL has launched – Fey, Belushi, Ferrel, Myers, Chase, Murray (boy, does the list go on) – you can imagine how much of a privilege it is to hear its creator talk in such a relaxed and intelligent manner. Suffice it to say, SNL is a big player and a lot of TV and Film from that side of the pond has been shaped by it. Hell, even Larry David quit SNL only to return the next day denying any knowledge of it (which later appeared here). I’ll leave you to listen to it for yourselves, as I don’t particularly want to spoil anything, but there are one or two noteworthy comments that should be remembered. Lorne says that he considers a good show one on which you can’t see his fingerprints. So typically different to the overproduced comedies that announce themselves then die after one or two seasons. I’m looking at you, Two and a Half Men. Similarly, Baldwin – seasoned SNL host that he is – focuses on the consistency in quality of the hosts, saying that the live excitement is something that a lot of them wouldn’t have enough of in their careers. That and the fact that the hosts normally get the best parts. Don’t believe me? Look at this and this.
It can be found online, and listened to for free, here.
So, in the Venn diagram of American comedy, this is pretty near the bullseye. I’m sorry for mixing metaphors.
Enjoy. You should do.
Naz Osmanoglu is a very funny man. Monster is very lucky to have him as resident MC and overall Turkish mess. Our thanks to Alex Brenner for the snap.
